Last week our church hosted VBS, and honestly, it was one for the books. Registrations broke every record we’d set. The building was packed to the walls night after night. The atmosphere was electric. Our volunteer team showed up in force — and gave a full week of their summer to love kids and point them to Jesus.
And then the moment we pray for actually happened: night after night, children gave their lives to Christ. Real decisions. Real tears. Real joy. If you’ve ever stood in a room while a kid decides to follow Jesus for the first time, you know there’s nothing like it. Scripture says heaven throws a party over one person who turns to God (Luke 15:10) — and last week, heaven was busy.
We celebrated hard. We should. But if you’ve led a church for very long, you know there’s a quiet worry that tends to arrive the morning after a week like that.
The worry we don’t always say out loud
It usually sounds something like this: “That was incredible. So… now what?”
We just watched a room full of kids say yes to Jesus. We have their names on cards. We have the highlight reel. What we don’t always have is a plan for Monday. A clear, repeatable process for what happens next. And it’s not just a VBS problem. The same worry shows up after a big Easter service, after a baptism Sunday, after any weekend where someone walks the aisle or checks the box on a connect card. A decision was made — and then everyone goes home.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth most of us have felt: a decision without a next step often becomes a decision without a life change. Not because the moment wasn’t real, but because nobody handed that new believer a path. They said yes to Jesus with genuine faith, and then they were left to figure out “what now” on their own — with no Bible-reading habit, no church family they’re actually known in, and no idea that baptism or a small group is even a possibility.
Jesus didn’t tell us to go make converts. He told us to go make disciples (Matthew 28:19). The decision is the doorway, not the destination. And what happens in the first few days and weeks after someone says yes often shapes whether their faith takes root or quietly fades.
What a good new believer pathway actually does
The good news is that closing this gap doesn’t require a huge staff or a complicated system. It requires a simple, repeatable pathway that a volunteer could run without you in the room. In our experience, the pathways that actually work share a few things in common:
- They celebrate immediately — and give assurance. The first message a new believer needs isn’t a to-do list; it’s “Welcome to the family, and you can be sure.” Doubt shows up fast. A warm, personal welcome that grounds them in God’s promise (not their feelings) does more than we realize.
- They put something in people’s hands. A new believer shouldn’t leave empty-handed. A simple guide — something they can actually work through in the first week — turns a moment into momentum. Bonus points if it’s age-appropriate, because a nine-year-old and a forty-year-old need the same gospel in very different packaging.
- They follow up consistently — and personally. A text from a real pastor beats a generic email every time. But most of us can’t manually track everyone, which is why the best pathways pair personal touch with automated rhythm — a sequence of encouragements over the first several weeks so no one falls through the cracks.
- They point to clear, concrete next steps. Get baptized. Join a group. Start reading the Word. Tell someone your story. New believers rarely take steps they don’t know exist. The pathway should name them plainly and make each one easy to take.
- They’re simple enough to actually happen. The most beautiful discipleship plan in the world is worthless if it lives in a drawer. If your process depends on you remembering, it will break the first busy week. It has to be turnkey.
If you have all five, you don’t just capture decisions — you launch disciples.
