This week was my 36th trip around the sun. As I read all of text messages, Facebook comments -- and even a phone call from the YMCA and Mike from the Chevy Dealership -- I was reminded of God's faithfulness and goodness. Over the past 36 years God has placed some amazing people in my life and allowed me to be a part of so many incredible opportunities. I'm so blessed and truly grateful.
I was around 12 years old when I first sensed God calling me into ministry while visiting my cousin Greg who was pastoring in Iowa (Hey Greg! 👋). Over the next few years God placed numerous people in my life -- most of whom I did not know -- to confirm that call.
Two stand out...
Once, while at a family camp our state denomination hosts each year, the state director approached me at the end of one of the nightly services and let me know God told him that I was called into ministry. I had never met this man so this was pretty shocking. He had no idea I was already wrestling with this decision and trying to talk God -- and myself -- out of it.
Then, on a trip to visit my old youth pastor at his new church a few hours away, a lady four rows ahead of me wandered back at the end of service to deliver the same message -- God has called you into ministry.
Despite how hard I was trying to avoid it, God was making abundantly clear to me, what He was calling me to do.
When I turned 16, the church I grew up in brought me on staff as the Youth Leader (with an office, cell phone, and everything! 🥳). Since then, for the past 20 years, I have preached well over a thousand sermons, led countless meetings, created hundreds of resources, and more. And along the way, I have watched God change lives over and over again. What a privilege it is to serve the King!
During the last 20 years, I also discovered that much of the day-to-day work of ministry isn't taught in seminary. Sure, you were taught how to properly exegete Scripture and the core doctrines of Christianity, but what about guests follow up and assimilation, hiring the right people, leading effective meetings, discipling new believers, onboarding volunteers -- and on and on the list goes.
I created Efficient Church to stand in the gap for pastors and leaders who are trying to faithfully lead their congregation, but don't have the time or team to devote to developing the critical systems to ensure church health, growth, and safety.
